Where these prices come from
Per-metre rates, gates and extras are the ranges in published UK contractor price guides, read on 2 November 2026 and updated in autumn 2026. The guides do not state whether VAT is included, so we treat them as before VAT. Regional labour rates move them: London and the South East sit at the top, the North and Wales nearer the bottom.
We checked the totals against public contract awards for school fencing, listed on the home page, which ran from £16,450 to £293,240 for single schools.

Questions about cost
How much does school fencing cost per metre?
Installed prices in published UK contractor price guides, autumn 2026: weldmesh about £60 to £120 a metre, 358 anti-climb mesh £90 to £160, steel palisade £75 to £140 and vertical bar railings £110 to £220, before VAT.
What does a whole school perimeter cost?
It depends far more on length and gates than on the panel. Council awards for single schools in 2024 and 2025 ranged from about £16,000 for one failed run to £293,000 for a new 3 m perimeter with every gate replaced at a London primary school.
Do schools pay VAT on fencing?
The contractor charges VAT at 20%. Maintained schools usually recover it through the council and academies through the VAT refund scheme for academy trusts, so the real cost is often the net figure. Check with your finance team.
Why do quotes for the same fence vary so much?
Ground conditions, slopes, how much old fence must come out, access for machinery, gate hardware and whether work is phased around the school day. Quotes only compare if they price one written specification.
Does the calculator include planning or design fees?
No. Add any planning application, survey, design or project management fees separately. Most simple replacement schemes need none of them; tall frontage fences and new MUGAs usually need planning.
